Comedian Launches New Children’s Book Series

Comedian and YA and children’s Author Catie Wilkins has launched a new series of funny books under her full first name Catherine Wilkins.

‘Café Chaos: My Family is Not A Piece of Cake’ is the story of Hope Crumble, an eleven-year-old about to start secondary school, whose family run a busy but struggling café, and don’t always have time for her.

The book has been praised by comedians and publishing insiders alike, with Romesh Ranganathan calling it, “A beautifully funny story – effortlessly brilliant.”

The middle-grade book, ideal for readers aged eight and up is illustrated by Katie Abey and published by Nosy Crow. It has already made quite a splash, being selected for the Book Fairies scheme in it’s first week of being published.

The launch took place on Thursday 27th March at Next Page Books, the popular Independent Book shop in Hitchin, and was attended by a mix of comedians, writers, and parents with children, who all had the opportunity to dress up as giant ice creams, just as Hope does in the book.

Sîan Taylor, from Nosy Crow said, “We are so excited to be publishing Café Chaos, with all the joy and laughter it’s going to bring.”

In December Catherine Wilkins won the Laugh Out Loud Teen Book Prize at the 2024 Lollies Book Awards, for her book, ‘You’re Not The Boss Of Me’ and has seven other funny books for children and teens, all published by Nosy Crow. The awards, (previously known as the Roald Dahl Awards, and The Smarties) celebrates the best and funniest children’s books in the UK and Ireland, and is voted for by children.

Wilkins said she was extremely happy and excited for Café Chaos to finally be published and she “can’t wait” for everyone to be able to read it. The second book in the series will be out next year, and Wilkins said she hopes to do more after that, “because I have so many ideas for these characters.”

Wilkins is also returning to the Edinburgh Festival in 2025 with her new show, ‘We’ll See’ from the 1st to the 10th of August at Stand 2. It will be her first live performance in Edinburgh since leaving the hit comedy podcast Drunk Women Solving Crime, which she co-created and co-hosted for five years.

Wilkins is married to comedian Richard Herring, and has previously appeared on Jon and Lucy’s Odd Couples for Channel 4, and Pointless Celebrities for BBC1.
