Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Rhys Nicholson

If Rhys Nicholson's mum reads this she might be in for a surprise when she gets to question six. Contrary to what Mrs Nicholson thinks, her little boy is one of Australia’s top comics. He picked up a Barry Award nomination at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2016 and then created a flurry when he “married” fellow comic Zoe Coombs Marr to underline their objection to Australian laws which do not allow same sex marriage. He returns to Edinburgh this year with I’m Fine in which he attempts to follow his successful 2016 with an equally acclaimed 2017. Catch a comic at the top of their game – but however good they are don’t tell their mother.

Rhys Nicholson: I'm Fine is at Underbelly Med Quad from August 3 -27. Tickets here.

1.What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies and/or check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt and check for spinach between your teeth)?

I make sure to forget every single joke I have ever written and then remember them all just as I get to the microphone. It’s a terrible, terrible thing to do to myself.

2. What irritates you?

Being asked how much money I make. And the feel of velvet. Eurgh, Imagine if a peach became sentient and asked me about my finances. What a nightmare.

3. What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

Decided to be gay.

4. What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?

His name was Jason I think?

5. What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?

One night I was sitting backstage and another comic jumped out from behind a door. I was quite startled.
