Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Mark Simmons: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

Mum: I’m very proud of him, always thought he should be on stage ever since he was a child. I love that he can earn a living doing what he loves.

Dad: Job???

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

I honestly do love what I do and think its the best job in the world. The only aspect that I truly hate is road closures and diversions on the way home after gigs

Dad: Comedian???

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

Thanks very much. I think I’m getting better each year and I like that I have my own way of presenting a one-liner show.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I’m on the free fringe again this year and hoping I need to buy bigger bucket.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

Absolutely crucial. I’ve had lucky breaks in terms of being able to do this as a full time job but not what people tend to describe as a ‘lucky break’…yet.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

Well, let’s just say every so often I self harm with a 9-iron.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

Mr Miyagi. The best character to ever be on film. Should have won the Oscar. (Not even joking).

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

Not sure if you mean drawers as in underwear or chest of drawers either way mine don’t stay tidy long once i’ve put my hand in and had a rummage around.
