Britain's favourite sitcom, Dad's Army ran for eighty episodes over nearly ten years and is rarely far from our screens - but three of those episodes were lost many years ago in cost-saving archive purges and haven't been seen since 1969. Now, using Jimmy Perry and David Croft's original scripts, those three episodes were faithfully recreatedby Mercury Productions for UKTV’s Gold channel to mark the 50th anniversary of their original broadcast.
Following a hugely popular airing on Gold in August this year featuring a brilliant new cast (Kevin McNally as Captain Mainwaring, Robert Bathurst as Sergeant Wilson, Kevin Eldon as Lance Corporal Jones, David Hayman as Private Frazer, Mathew Horne as Private Walker, Timothy West as Private Godfrey and Tom Rosenthal as Private Pike) these three lost episodes and critically-acclaimed comedy classic can now be enjoyed again, on Blu-ray and DVD.
Episode List:
THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG-DISTANCE WALKER
Britain is facing invasion by Hitler and his Nazi hordes - and the men of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard are facing a crisis of their own. Private Walker, source of their supplies of whisky, cigarettes and other essential black market goods, has been called up to the army. Captain Mainwaring decides to use all his standing as an officer and a bank manager to have Walker excused from military service. Meanwhile, Jones and co. try to ensure that Walker fails his army medical.
A STRIPE FOR FRAZER
When he's told he can make a member of the platoon a Corporal, Captain Mainwaring instigates a competition between Frazer and Jones to see who deserves the promotion. Both candidates do their best to impress him, particularly during a demonstration on how to face down a Nazi stormtrooper, but things go awry when a power-crazed Frazer charges the other men with court-martial offences.
UNDER FIRE
Tipped off by Frazer and Godfrey, Captain Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson investigate a house from where they believe someone may have been signalling to enemy aircraft. They take the suspect back to the church hall, but chaos ensues when an incendiary bomb comes through the roof and the platoon desperately battles the blaze.
