News: Fans Up In Arms Over Dad's Army Warning About Language

Dad’s Army fans have expressed their surprise after a TV screening of the 1971 movie spin-off of the hit TV series featured a warning about language before it was broadcast on Saturday night.

According to a BBC source the warning was because of the use of the phrase 'fuzzy wuzzy' - one of the phrases Lance Corporal Jones, played by Clive Dunn, had a habit of using.

A BBC spokesman said: "Since Dad’s Army first aired public attitudes have changed significantly and guidance was given at the start of the programme due to a specific discriminatory remark."

John Sands tweeted: "Last night the BBC put out a warning before the "Dad's Army" film that it contained discriminatory language that might offend some viewers. I despair!"

Jim Slater tweeted: "The BBC is warning viewers that the 1971 Dad’s Army movie contained "discriminatory language". The problem with such (woke) disclaimers on even the most innocuous programmes is that the warnings cease to have any meaning when applied to genuinely offensive content."

The classic sitcom is not the first programme from the past to be re-evaulated. The Fawlty Towers 'Germans' episode now comes with "extra guidance" on UKTV.

In a statement issued on social media at the time the channel said: "We will be adding extra guidance and warnings to the front of programmes to highlight potentially offensive content and language."
