TV Review, Am I Being Unreasonable?, Series Two, BBC One

If you enjoyed the first series of Am I Being Unreasonable written by and starring Daisy May Cooper and Selin Hizli you will probably really be looking forward to this second series. I certainly was. But I'm going to come clean. I could barely follow what was going on in the first episode of the new series. You'll have to watch it yourself to decide if I'm being unreasonable.

If you haven't even seen the first series I suggest to play catch up on iPlayer before attempting to watch this. TBH I have already seen it when it went out back in 2022 and I could have done with a refresher longer than the quickfire recap of this story of love, loss and betrayal, centred around chaotic narcissist Nic. Working out what was a flashback, what was in the present and what was really happening was the least of my problems.

With a little bit of help from the BBC information I can tell you that the action picks up straight after Nic has fled from the memorial service after the affair between Nic (Daisy May Cooper) and her brother-in-law was revealed. Nic is in a right old state and jumps into a cab only to find that the cab driver, played by comedian Tom Davis, seems to be in an even worse state, making you wonder if anyone is going to survive the car journey.

Nic does make it out and then tries to check into a hotel – nice turn from comedian Jamali Maddix as the rhyming receptionist – where her credit card is refused. Meanwhile her son Ollie (the always superb Lenny Rush) has been discharged from hospital and promptly gets himself trapped in a chocolate dispensing machine after trying to steal a Twix, which, for me anyway, was the highlight. But I did think that perhaps I'd accidentally watched the wrong episode.

Maybe things will become clearer as the series goes on and the disparate plot threads weave together but for any newbies this is a tough watch. This feels in stark contrast to the first series which hooked you in from ther get-go. You need to know the characters to appreicate the dark comedy at play as well as the plot twists and turns and in this first episode of series two there is lots going on but little to grab hold of. When you've worked out what is happening please let me know.
