A petition has been set up protesting about Amanda Knox's forthcoming Edinburgh Fringe show Cartwheel.

Knox was convicted and later acquitted of murdering British student Meredith Kercher in Italy in 2007. She served four years in an Italian prison before being acquitted on appeal. 

Ivory Coast-born Rudy Guede served 13 years of a 16-year sentence for Kercher's murder after his fingerprints were found at the scene.

The petition was set up by Sally Alington, a friend of Meredith's sister who met Meredith when she was working with her, saving money for her gap year trip to Perugia. It has been signed by over 4000 people, and says the show not only disrespects Meredith's memory, but it also risks normalising violence against women by making light of such a harrowing event.

As far as we know Alington has not seen the show, which opens at the Fringe this week.

Meredith's sister Stephanie Kercher, addressing Knox on BBC Breakfast, said: "What I would say is to think about the family here, think about her friends and to turn the tables if it was your sister that this had happened to, because I know you have a sister as well."

According to the press release, Amanda Knox’s show explores "what happens after the worst thing imaginable is over. A woman approaching forty, she finds herself juggling motherhood alongside an existential crisis nobody prepares you for. Legally, there is no opponent to confront, no injustice left to correct. Instead, she examines her own identity and what it means to rebuild a life that was shaped in response to something that never should have happened."

Knox told the Telegraph: "I don't joke about Meredith's death. I joke a lot about how I was vilified, but I don't joke about her murder."
