TV: Revolting, BBC2, Episode 3

Heydon Prowse and Jolyon Rubinstein take some pretty good swipes at the state of the nation in the third episode of their latest series. The sketch that is likely to ruffle the most feathers is the one on Forced Marriages, subtitled “Seriously, Don’t Tell The Bride”, in which all the arrangements are done for the happy day without the bride being present. Brother Mehat is looking forward to the big day, with one reservation: “I do wish my dad hadn’t threatened to have her hanged if she said no.”

Elsewhere UK politics is mercilessly poked. The “honest subtitles” for one of Theresa May’s Brexit speeches were recorded a while ago, but might as well have been recorded today, as she says “Do we have a plan for Brexit?" and they suggest that her inner monologue is saying "do we bollocks”.

Intrepid leftie-bashing reporter Dale Maily, meanwhile, penetrates the BBC World Service and accuses them of pandering to terrorists by broadcasting to Pakistan and there’s a touch of Charlie Brooker’s Newswipe about the sketch in which real-life Shakespearean actor Paapa Essiedu claims to play 'real-life' Boris Johnson in his spare time, finding his motivation by channeling “a five year old in a grown man’s body”.

Oh, and look out for the square chickens, designed for easy packaging by Swedes for greater efficiency. It’s hilarious even if Heydon Prowse’s Scandi accent sounds like it comes from somewhere south of Johannesburg.

The programme is available on catch-up here.
