Revolting
Heydon Prowse and Jolyon Rubinstein take some pretty good swipes at the state of the nation in the third episode of their latest series. The sketch that is likely to ruffle the most feathers is the one on Forced Marriages, subtitled “Seriously, Don’t Tell The Bride”, in which all the arrangements are done for the happy day without the bride being present. Brother Mehat is looking forward to the big day, with one reservation: “I do wish my dad hadn’t threatened to have her hanged if she said no.”
One of the problems of seeing a lot of comedy is that you become a bit unshockable. When I watched the first episode of Revolting I thought the Real Housewives Of Isis sketch was amusing but nothing to get into a tizzy about. I’d heard plenty of similar gags about jihadi brides on the circuit in recent years from the likes of Shazia Mirza. And yet the sketch has been accused of being Islamophobic and has given some handy publicity to the new series from Jolyon Rubinstein and Heydon Prowse.
