James Mullinger has had what you could call an interesting stand-up comedy career. He was doing perfectly well on the UK circuit but then in 2014 relocated to Saint John in New Brunswick, Canada, where he has become something of a local superstar. In 2016 he filled the Harbour Station arena, breaking the ticket sales record for comedy gigs at the venue in the process – the record was previously held by his hero Jerry Seinfeld.
"When I moved here, I was told I wouldn't get any work as a comedian and last week I sold more tickets than Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, Jeff Dunham, Def Leppard and Alice Cooper when they played the same venue," Mullinger said at the time.
"I had no big plan coming here. I had no big team behind me. I had no Canadian TV credits or festival credits. I had nothing except some jokes and a work ethic. I just came here, took every gig I could, did good work, people liked what I did and they came out in their thousands to support. It's that simple. And anyone could do this. I am not special in any way."
Since then the former comedy editor of GQ has co-written the cult film about stand-up, The Comedian's Guide To Survival, starring James Buckley and had a part in it too – as a successful stand-up.
More recently he is due to appear in the new horror movie Anonymous Zombie. And City On Fire, the documentary about Mullinger, Saint John and that Harbour Station gig has been selected for the closing night gala at the Silver Wave film festival in Fredericton in November. Not bad going at all.
