A musical version of the classic sitcom Father Ted is in the pipeline, written by the original writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews.
Graham Linehan confirmed the news on Twitter: "‘Pope Ted—The Father Ted Musical’ written by Arthur Mathews and myself, music by Neil Hannon, is almost written. I just thought you’d like to know. THIS IS NOT A DRILL!"
Given the title it sounds as if Father Ted ends up in the Vatican. No mention has been made of casting but Dermot Morgan, who played Ted Crilly in the sitcom died the day after filming finished on the last series in 1998. Frank Kelly, who played Father Jack, died in 2016. Ardal O'Hanlon and Pauline McLynn, however, are still alive and kicking.
Inevitably some people on Twitter questioned the notion of a Ted musical, to which Linehan replied: "Musicals are wonderful! Watch ‘Singing in the Rain’ again and be immediately happy."
