New Interview: Josh Widdicombe

I last interviewed Josh Widdicombe in late 2011, when he was first starting to be tipped for stardom. You can read that interview here.

News: C4's Last Leg To Tour?

The team behind hit Channel 4 chat show The Last Leg may play some live dates later this year. Josh Widdicombe has told me that there has been talk of them going on the road. Not necessarily to play theatres at this stage but maybe trying out the freewheeling, playful mix of sketches, songs and talk "in a festival tent."

News: British Comedy Awards Nominations

The British Comedy Awards 2013 nominations have just been revealed with Adam Hills picking up three nods. The feelgood Australian is in the running for three prizes - Breakthough Artist and Best Entertainment Personality while his topical chat show The Last Leg is up for Best Entertainment Programme.  Hospital comedy Getting On is also linked to three awards, with the programme up for Best Sitcom and Vicki Pepperdine and Jo Brand up against each other for Best Comedy Actress.

The Week Ahead: Nov 4 - Nov 10

Comedy residencies used to be three or four nights, maybe a week if you were a big attraction. This week, however, two major comedy shows kick off in London and will still be on for quite a bit longer when the Christmas decorations are taken down in January.

Opinion: The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of...Amateur Performers

I went to see Adam Hills film his new live DVD at the Hammersmith Apollo last night. There was a hiccup with the ticketing which meant that Hills started an hour late. You'd expect this to put the audience in a pretty humourless mood, but with Hills it had the opposite effect. After a brief apology it was on with the show and everyone was more delighted than ever that the gig had started. Maybe it helped that the great British comedy audience had extra drinking time, but I suspect that it was just Hills' winning personality.

Preview: The Week Ahead Sept 16 - 22

The poster on the left kind of says it all really. Jo Brand comperes this gig at the Union Chapel on Tuesday in aid of providing greater choice at the end of life. Brand has not done a proper stand-up tour for some time, but she is always an excellent host, having turned her deadpan sardonic humour into something more warm, engaging, accessible but still as funny.

Review: Wil Anderson, Soho Theatre

Smart must mean something different in Australia. When I heard that Wil Anderson was a smart Australian comedian I was expecting someone with attitude, someone who had some new comedic insights into our place on the planet. Not someone who did jokes about the difference between cats and dogs. Just because you introduce a canine v feline routine by saying that you know it is well-trodden ground doesn't make you a Stewart Lee-style meta-comedian.
