Film Review
If you’ve come to this website then I presume you are interested in stand-up comedy. And if you are remotely interested in stand-up comedy you really should see Dying Laughing.
Comedies about stand-up comedy are difficult to pull off. How do you capture the highs and lows of performing live on film? How do you capture the buzz of the good gig, the despair of the bad gig? How do you capture a world that is simultaneously niche and mainstream? The Comedian’s Guide to Survival comes pretty close.
I wasn’t sure whether Beyond The Joke should be reviewing I, Daniel Blake. I’ve already been ticked off this week by the pedantry police for reviewing Black Mirror because it is not a comedy. And Ken Loach’s latest movie definitely isn’t a comedy. But Dave Johns, the actor who plays the title role, is a comedian. And there are definitely comic moments in it. And, furthermore, it’s an important film, which should get as much publicity as possible even if it doesn’t need it.
A few years ago I wrote an article about how successful British sitcoms invariably struggled to be turned into successful British films. Since then, however, the code seems to have been cracked. Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa was a critical and commercial hit and this year Absolutely Fabulous has already thrived at the box office. Let’s not mention the Dad’s Army remake as it might spoil this thesis.
