Jonny Pelham
One of the most exciting stand-up comedians on the circuit, Jonny Pelham (Live at the Apollo, Mock The Week, Alan Davies As Yet Untitled) brings his critically acclaimed 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe show, Off Limits, to venues nationwide for 2022, including three dates at London’s Soho Theatre, as part of his debut UK tour.
Channel 4 has launched a new batch of Comedy Blaps. Past Blaps have gone on to spawn hit sitcoms, such as Stath Lets Flats.
One of the new Blaps comes from stand-up comedian Jonny Pelham, who picked up a Herald Angel Award in Edinburgh this summer for his show Off Limits.
Jonny Pelham was just eight years old when he was abused. He was raped, repeatedly, by a male babysitter who was a family friend.
The comic has decided to make this the beginning of his show – rather than a reveal which appears towards the end.
Instead he delves into the effect the abuse has had on him – and his efforts to put himself back together again.
Comedian Jonny Pelham has won the Herald Angel Award for his latest Edinburgh Fringe show Off Limits.
Who knows best, critics or the public? This is a question that usually comes up with big stars. Mrs Brown's Boys regularly gets a critical hammering despite being hugely popular. Peter Kay has his knockers despite being a consistent crowdpleaser. Elsewhere critics adore Stewart Lee while the general public can be divided between those who get him and those who don't.
Perhaps this is what all comedy talent competitions should be like. Short, with a small line-up and, most importantly, of a very high standard. Broadcast live on Radio 2, nobody dared overrun, making proceedings whizz by. Previous winners of the BBC New Comedy Award have included Rhod Gilbert, who was one of the judges tonight, alongside Chortle's Steve Bennett and the Head of BBC Radio Comedy Jane Berthoud. But while the judges mulled over the performances, the result was left to a listeners' vote.
