matt berry
After a one-off about Brexit last year Matt Berry returns as somewhat eccentric historian Michael Squeamish to offer his thoughts on various subjects. Coming up in future weeks we have Squeamish about relationships, London and the countryside, but first it's a look at Entertainments (sic).
Following the success of last year’s mockumentary, The Road to Brexit, cult favourite Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows) returns to BBC Two with four more episodes, entitled Squeamish About... that will take on new themes.
I've read in various advance publicity interviews for Year of the Rabbit that its star Matt Berry calls it "The Sweeney but in Victorian times." Thanks for doing my review for me Matt. I didn't realise quote how literal he was being. OK, there's no "get yer clothes on you're nicked" but then I'm not sure if that actual often-quoted line ever appeared in the old John Thaw cop show anyway. Oh, and there are more laughs here. And a cameo from the Elephant Man.
It looks like there will hopefully be a fourth series of Toast of London. Matt Berry just needs to find the time to write it.
Berry was talking to The Guardian to promote his forthcoming Victorian crime comedy Year of the Rabbit.
The feature says: "Berry is planning a fourth series of Toast of London. He’s just not sure when he’ll have time to write it." He currently has a major commitment to the TV series What We Do In The Shadows, which means living and working in America for three months a year.
Set in the dark heart of Victorian London, Year of the Rabbit follows Detective Inspector Rabbit (BAFTA winner Matt Berry), a hardened booze-hound who’s seen it all, and his hapless new partner Strauss (Freddie Fox). While investigating a murder, the ambitious daughter (Susan Wokoma) of the chief of police joins them, becoming London’s first female officer. Together, the trio must fight crime while rubbing shoulders with street gangs, crooked politicians and Bulgarian princes.
I didn't write about this Matt Berry one-off written by Arthur Mathews earlier because I assumed it would be postponed when Brexit was postponed. Instead it is going full steam ahead, so at least there is something to laugh about at the moment.
Matt Berry is to release an album of television themes.
Channel 4 has officially announced that Matt Berry is to star in a new sitcom for the channel.
Watch Matt Berry and Nigel Planer in this seasonal short film about a band making a Christmas single, with music specially written for it by Elbow. The film is directed by John Panton and co-written by ace Emmy-winning comedy writer David Quantick. John Panton explains a bit more about the project here.
