nina conti
Nina Conti is mainly famous for her stage ventriloquism, but in recent years she has branched out into making documentaries around the subject of voice-throwing. The Bafta-nominated Her Master’s Voice explored her friendship with maverick Ken Campbell and delved into the outer fringes of the art. And now she is back on film again in Clowning Around.
Nina Conti's new documentary, Clowning Around, is to be broadcast on BBC4 on March 15. This follows her directorial debut, Her Master's Voice, which won a Grierson Award and a BAFTA nomination. In this new film Conti tells the story of her two year stint as a hospital clown.
Ventriloquist Nina Conti has always been an intriguing performer. Whereas an arena-filler like Jeff "I Kill You!" Dunham plays the genre largely for easy laughs, Conti is more ambitious, constantly breaking down the barrier between performer, puppet and audience.
