Are you always stuck for something to say at dinner parties? Are you lost for words when trying to conjure up conversational gambits? Then No Such Thing As A Fish* may be just the podcast for you. Instalments come out every Friday and are put together by some of the “Elves” who live at the bottom of Stephen Fry's garden, ie they do the research on QI and make Mr Fry appear like the human incarnation of Google.
It has been interesting to see Michael Gove's attack on Blackadder for perpetuating the myth about World War 1 being a "misbegotten shambles". Judging by the Education Secretary's comments one might think that one of the greatest British sitcoms ever made was actually a commie plot to bring down the establishment. Gove even went as far as accusing Richard Curtis and Ben Elton's portrayal of idiotic officers as being "designed to belittle Britain and its leaders".
The Establishment Club, previously revived as a late-night event at Ronnie Scotts is to rise again, but this time as a Sunday lunchtime affair at Bentley's Oyster Bar and Grill. The first event will take place on December 15 and the eclectic line-up includes Scott Capurro (pictured), Professor Laurie Taylor, Man Booker prize-winning novelist Howard Jacobson, Scottish comic Arnold Brown and music from Niggaz with Croissants and other surprise guests.
Interesting to read about Griff Rhys Jones paying tribute to Mel Smith in the Radio Times this week while also pointing out how different they were. “I invited Mel to my country cottage and he never took his coat off. He took me to the races and I read a book. I dragged him sailing and he asked to 'go in' when we were halfway home and 30 miles from the nearest port. He loved a drink. I am teetotal. He never carried a credit card. I never have cash. He never went for a walk. I run ten miles a week. He worshipped Stephen Sondheim.
A bumper crop of gongs for our comedy brethren in the Queen's Birthday Honours List this morning. Tony "Baldrick" Robinson gets a knighthood for his public and political work and Rowan Atkinson is awarded a CBE for his services to drama and charity. Rob Brydon bags an MBE, while veteran producer Jon Plowman pocketed an OBE and founder of the Leicester Comedy Festival Geoff Rowe trousered a BEM.
Michael Parkinson eat your heart out. Roll over Graham Norton and tell Alan Carr the news. Richard Herring's "Stephen Fry in suicide attempt" scoop has shown that the biggest stories are not always stage managed and released to the media as part of a strategy worked out with military precision.
Sunday Sept 1, 2013. I just heard on the radio that Sir David Frost had died so googled myself to see if I'd ever interviewed him – it's easier than using one's memory these days. I hadn't but I had written about him recently when he presented this TV documentary reviewed below on the history of the sketch show.
