Filmmaker Terry Gilliam and actor Robert Lindsay have added unique new trophies to their collections, having received a hand-crafted personalised version of the Aardman character Morph during the final events of Bristol’s twentieth annual Slapstick festival of screen comedy.
The presentations were made at Bristol Old Vic at the finale of separate clips-rich celebrations of their careers, hosted by Dr Matthew Sweet.
Award-winning screen and stage actor Hugh Bonneville is to host the gala evening of silent film comedies and live music which will be the centrepiece of next year’s 20th edition of Slapstick, the UK’s biggest celebration of silent and classic screen comedy.
Bookings for the event - at The Beacon in central Bristol on Friday 16 February - will open at 10am on Friday 8 September with an early bird discount on offer for bookings made before the end of the month.
In a late change to the advertised programme for the 19th annual edition of Slapstick in Bristol, the event now taking place on Saturday 18 February at St George’s, Brandon Hill (5.30pm) will be COMIC STRIP STORIES - a 40th anniversary look back at The Comic Strip Presents TV series & films which helped to make stars of Ade Edmondson, French & Saunders, Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer and more.
Europe’s biggest celebration of silent and classic screen comedy - the Bristol-based Slapstick Festival - is introducing a new music-related strand for its 19th annual edition (February 14 to 19) celebrating entertainers with a gift for combining comedy and music.

Bristol’s annual Slapstick festival of silent and classic comedy is adding a choice of celebrity-led live online events to the series of archive treasures it has been sharing via its YouTube channel since the start of the Covid-19 lockdown.
Bristol’s Slapstick Festival has confirmed that the Silent Comedy Gala it is staging at the Hippodrome on Sunday (tonight) with Marcus Brigstocke as host will be the last until 2021 at the earliest. The classic films and live music event has been the centre-piece of every Slapstick since the festival began 15 years ago and regularly attracts big name hosts and an audience of more than 1,500.
One of last century’s most popular TV double acts – Little and Large - will be back on stage together for the first time in decades in Bristol in January as part of the extended 15th annual edition of the UK’s biggest celebration of silent and classic screen comedy: SLAPSTICK.
