The wonderfully weird and weirdly wonderful Flowers returns to C4 on Monday, June 11 at 10pm and runs all week. Here is an interview with one of the stars, Julian Barratt. Read an interview with another of the stars, Olivia Colman, here.
The first series of Flowers was incredibly well received. How did you feel about its reception?
Unless you’ve been cryogenically frozen recently* you must have seen the images of Julian Barratt from Mindhorn. Either doing a high-kicking stunt or wearing an eye-patch. These images are amusing but are nothing compared to the film, which is a breathless hoot from start to finish.
The line-up of the 6th LOCO London Comedy Film Festival at BFI Southbank has been announced. Highlights include new films featuring Julian Barratt, Noel Fiedling, Julia Davis, Alice Lowe, Aisling Bea, Brett Goldstein and Roger Allam.
The festival runs from May 4 - 7 and opens with the UK premiere of The Hippopotamus, based on Stephen Fry’s bestselling black comic novel and directed by John Jencks, starring Roger Allam, Tim McInnerny, Fiona Shaw, Matthew Modine, Emily Berrington and Russell Tovey.
One of Channel 4's oddest comedies in recent years is to get a second series.
Writer/performer Will Sharpe's Flowers will return for six more episodes in association with US comedy streaming channel Seeso.
The acclaimed show, which aired over five consecutive nights, introduced the world to the eccentric Flowers family – Maurice, Deborah and the twins – and was praised for its startling originality and seamless shifts from the profane to the profound in an ostensibly traditional family sitcom setting.
I wish I could come up with a way of describing dark comedy without calling it “dark”. It has become a catch-all adjective to describe everything from Frankie Boyle to Julia Davis. And now it is being tossed around willy nilly to describe C4's Flowers.
More information and images have been released to promote the eagerly anticipated Channel 4 comedy Flowers.
The six-part series, due for broadcast this Spring, will star Olivia Colman (Broadchurch, The Lobster, Peep Show, Hot Fuzz) and Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh, Nathan Barley) and is written and directed by BAFTA-nominated Will Sharpe (Black Pond).
One thing is certain. You won’t see another film like Aaaaaaaah! this year. Or, probably, any year. And not just because Steve Oram’s directorial debut has no dialogue except for ape-like grunts, but also because it features Toyah Willcox having a shit in a kitchen and Noel Fielding getting his knob gobbled in a seedy cameo.
