Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow: a Lockdown Christmas 1603
Ben Elton’s Shakespearean comedy is back for a two-hander Christmas Special starring David Mitchell as the bard and Gemma Whelan as Kate.
I was anxious about this stage version of TV sitcom Upstart Crow about the comedic travails of William Shakespeare. When I interviewed writer Ben Elton earlier this year he talked about tackling issues of gender fluidity and diversity I thought that this incarnation might take itself too seriously to be a full-on comedy. Not a bit of it.
Full casting for Ben Elton’s stage adaptation of the critically acclaimed BBC TV sitcom Upstart Crow - which opens at the Gielgud Theatre on 7 February 2020 and will see David Mitchell make his West End debut - has been announced.
David Mitchell is to star in the West End next year in Ben Elton’s stage adaptation of the critically acclaimed BBC TV sitcom, Upstart Crow. This all-new comedy - written especially for the stage - will see Mitchell once more don the bald wig and bardish coddling pouch in his iconic characterisation of Will Shakespeare. Tickets are available here.
The first images have been released of Sir Kenneth Branagh in this year’s Upstart Crow Christmas Special. Kenneth appears as the mysterious stranger in A Crow Christmas Carol.
David Mitchell returns as aspiring playwright/superstar William Shakespeare in Ben Elton's return-to-form sitcom. I say return-to-form with a couple pf caveats. And secondly Upstart Crow does owe a huge debt to Elton's finest half hour (aided by Richard Curtis), Blackadder.

Ben Elton's sitcom Upstart Crow is to get a third series.
The news was confirmed at the end of the final episode of the second series last night, which featured David Mitchell's aspiring bard writing Romeo and Juliet.
There will also be a Christmas special in which Emma Thompson is to play Queen Elizabeth I.
