Johnny Vegas, Kevin Eldon, John Kearns and Pat Cahill will visit Kilkenny next month for an exclusive event that will bring Sky Cat Laughs festival goers the world premieres of three brand new Sky Arts physical comedy shorts.
Sky will premiere Brilliantman!, Three Kinds of Stupid and Rotters at the festival on Sunday 31st May in advance of a forthcoming physical comedy strand on Sky Arts this autumn.
Kilkenny’s Sky Cat Laughs Festival has launched its 21st birthday edition today with a bumper ‘coming of age’ programme that includes a special birthday bash gig, musical hoedown, physical comedy showcase, comedic tribute to past comedy heroes, premiere screenings of forthcoming Sky comedy programming and a stellar line-up of some of the best comedic talent in the world.
“It’s all gone downhill. It’s not what it was.” The first comedian I bump into in Machynlleth’s high street is Stewart Lee who, typically, (ironically) mocks the rampant commercialism of the Machnylleth Comedy Festival, now in its fifth year. An estimated 4000 comedy fans visited the small Welsh town this weekend, compared to around 500 in the first year, but the increase in size, or the bulging programme of events, does not mean the festival has betrayed its boutique roots. Perfect weather, perfect fans, perfect comedy.
Last Friday about an hour before I was due to head out to my first gig and file my first review I had a call from the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Comedy Festival press office asking me not to file any reviews until after the five-day Festival was over. This is a festival where the performers don't want to pressure of being judged by journalists, I was told. Fair enough, I thought. This starkly sums up the contrast with the Edinburgh Festival which doesn't start until August and I've already got PRs lobbying me for review space.
