BBC Radio 4 regular Count Arthur Strong (played by Steve Delaney) is set to embark on his huge UK tour this autumn.
Count Arthur Strong: Is There Anybody Out There?’ starts at Durham Gala Theatre on September 18 and runs until late November.
It's an interesting time for Count Arthur Strong. After three series the BBC decided not to recomission his sitcom, which doesn't leave many options for this unique character. There's panto, but you are unlikely to see Count Arthur on panel shows. And I'm not sure if he gets that much corporate work. I can't see him hosting the Plumber of the Year awards.
Count Arthur Strong has announced a UK tour for 2018.
This follows his 2017 Sound of Mucus tour. His Alive and Unplugged tour starts at the Lyceum Theatre Crewe on April 12 and currently concludes on June 23 at the Plaza, Stockport.
Count Arthur has offered this description of his forthcoming outing.
I've been looking forward to this episode since I interviewed Count Arthur Strong's creator Steve Delaney in the Spring. I innocently asked him if he felt there were similarities between his creation and Graham Fellows' creation John Shuttleworth. Delaney told me that Shuttleworth had an upcoming cameo in the series but at the time I was told not to tell anyone. And now here it is and it doesn't disappoint.
One of the heated debates on social media is whether Count Arthur Strong has transferred successfully from radio to television. There is a school of thought that somehow the dotty creation of Steve Delaney works better without pictures. I’m not so sure myself. One thing I am sure of though is that he certainly works brilliantly on the live stage.
John Shuttleworth is to appear in the BBC1 sitcom Count Arthur Strong.
The Sheffield songsmith guests in the episode which goes out on Friday, June 30 at 8.30pm, entitled The Three Wishes.
John Shuttleworth will also be appearing at The Gilded Balloon Edinburgh on the 12th and 13th of August as part of his My Last Will And Tasty Mint Tour. Tickets here.
A few weeks ago there was a discussion in London about the state of the sitcom, suggesting that it was in crisis. The talk has just been released on podcast and you can have a listen here.
There have been some interesting comments about new comedy White Gold, which started earlier this week. People who didn’t like it pointed to the fact that there was nobody nice in it. Nobody you could actually like. Which is not how English sitcoms are supposed to be. They are supposed to be full of loveable losers.
