Count Arthur Strong
BBC1 has confirmed the transmission date for the new series of sitcom Count Arthur Strong.
It will return to BBC1 on May 19 at 8.30pm. .
The seven-part series is once again written by Steve Delaney, who plays Count Arthur, and Graham Linehan. The regular cast all returns. There is Michael (Rory Kinnear), Eggy (Dave Plimmer), John The Watch (Andy Linden) and cafe owners Bulent (Chris Ryman) and his sister Sinem (Zahra Ahmadi). There is also a new customer, cheerful Birdie (Bronagh Gallagher).
Great news today that the BBC has recommissioned Count Arthur Strong. I was concerned that the move from BBC2 to BBC1 for the second series had been the last throw of the dice and that if it didn’t ascend to Miranda-like status it would not be back.
In the last few days I’ve heard about Count Arthur Strong being mooted as new host of Top Gear and Alexei Sayle being tipped for the job. At the time of writing Sue Perkins is the odds-on bookies favourite, even though she has tweeted that she is not interested.
Last week when the end of the year round-ups were being bandied around Reece Shearsmith bemoaned the fact that Inside No 9 was being forgotten because it went out way back at the start of the year. Will Steve Delaney, the creator of glorious comedy dimwit and ham actor Count Arthur Strong, be similarly bypassed at the end of 2015? I sincerely hope not.
Count Arthur Strong is to move from BBC2 to BBC1 for its second series next year. It has been confirmed that the new series, starring Steve Delaney and Rory Kinnear, will start on January 6 at 10.35pm.
Sitcom buffoon Count Arthur Strong has announced a UK tour for 2015. The ‘Somebody Up There Licks Me!’ tour will start at the Norwich Playhouse on February 5 and finish with two nights at the Bloomsbury Theatre on May 1 & 2.
So the good news is that The Wright Way will not be coming back. Shane Allen, the BBC's Comedy head honcho has confirmed that there will be no second series of Ben Elton's risible, dated Health & Safety so-called sitcom.
Update 14/9/13 – Good to see the first series of Count Arthur Strong getting a quick Saturday night repeat run at 7.30pm from tonight. It could be the perfect feet-up, cup-of-tea Dad's Army-type slot for it. Here's a review of the wonderfully nuanced but also enjoyably broad comedy from when it first went out earlier this year. If you like the sitcom you might also be interested in Through It All I've Always Laughed: The Memoirs of Count Arthur Strong, which are published on November 7.
Rory Kinnear must be one of the UK's most versatile actors, equally at home onstage in classical dramas and on TV in comedies. His latest role on the box is in the new BBC2 series, Count Arthur Strong, where he demonstrates some mighty meaty comedy chops.
Let's get one thing straight. I'm certainly not backtracking on my opinion of Ben Elton's pitiful sitcom. But at the same time I've found some of the objections to The Wright Way particularly interesting.
