Janey Godley
Nominations for the 2020 Scottish Comedy Awards were opened at the start of the year, in March a panel whittled the long list down to the below short list.
This year’s nominations feature a host of worldwide stars including David Tennant for his role as Crowley in Amazon’s Good Omens, Edinburgh’s Ncuti Gatwa as Otis in Netflix’s Sex Education, and Bathgate boy Lewis Capaldi who famously got in an hilarious bit of trolling with Noel Gallagher.
A comedy film co-written by stand-up comedian Janey Godley has won Best Short Film Award at the Winchester Film Festival.
The Last Mermaid is directed by Fi Kelly and also stars Gabriel Quigley and Sanjeev Kohli of Still Game and Fags, Mags and Bags.
It was co-written by Godley and Jules Middleton.
Jess Brough, who founded the Fringe of Colour, has landed second place in The Hot 100, Who To Watch Out For In 2020 chart, just published by Scottish magazine The List.
Brough (pictured) set up the Fringe of Colour in 2018 having seen how overwhelmingly white and middle class the Fringe was both on and offstage.
Mother and daughter Janey Godley and Ashley Storrie have both been shortlsted for Herald Scottish Culture Awards.
They are in the comedy category alongside Frankie Boyle and Kevin Bridges.
Janey Godley’s complaint that she thinks she was ripped off by the people who made the new Irn-Bru ad has caused a stir in comedy circles. It is not the first time a comedian has allegedly had input into an advertising campaign and not been given credit. Or, in some cases, paid.
Janey Godley has been nominated for four awards in the second Scottish Comedy Awards nominations, announced today. The Glaswegian comedian is up for Best Headliner, Best Compere, Best Podcast (with her daughter Ashley Storrie) and Best Festival/Tour Show.
So I'm saying yes to Free Festival, don't see why I shouldn't. The Free Festival has become the fringe to the Fringe. I am looking forward to the experience. I have done the BIG venues for years and although I love my boys at the Underbelly and all the gang at Pleasance and Gilded etc... I am looking forward to striking out. There is a snobbery about the Free Festival with suggestions that it is there for 'people who cant get into the big professional venues'.
Picture the scene, I walk out of a gig at Edinburgh Fringe, it's raining and I am laughing and saying goodbye to some folks and I get straight into a cab as someone shouts "Loved the show Janey" and the taxi driver asks "Are you a comedian?" I reply quite proudly "Yes I am" and I forgot in my elation that I usually don't speak about comedy in taxis as I know what he is going to say next...
I forgot and before I could think another thing I heard him say the inevitable "Do you swear?".
The first 100 shows in this year’s Women In Comedy Festival have been announced. The annual Festival, which started last year, takes place around Greater Manchester from October 11 - 26 in over 16 venues.
