Damn, blast and bloody hell. It's the final episode of the fifth series of Inside No. 9. And I'm probably not the only person who thinks that this is the best series yet. And maybe the most talked about too.
It's another stylistic curveball for the fifth episode in the fifth series of Inside No. 9. I wondered if creators/stars Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton could sustain their high standard in this run, but if anything they have surpassed it.
Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton don't make it easy for critics do they? Or maybe they do. Every episode of Inside No. 9 is so different to the last it is easy to write something fresh, whereas with a lot of comedy series (not that Inside No. 9 is necessarily comedy anyway) each episode often has the same premise. Then again, on the other hand, one must not even come close to giving away spoilers where Inside No. 9 is concerned.
Reece Shearsmith is to co-star in a new play by Steven Moffat to be directed by his fellow League of Gentlemen performer Mark Gatiss.
The Unfriend will co-star Amanda Abbington and Frances Barber and will have its world premiere at the chichester Festival this summer.
Update after episode aired: Well, I was right in predicting that they would pull the rug from under us, I was just a bit wrong in how they did it...
I was lucky enough to see the first episode in the fifth series of Inside No. 9 at a special screening at the BFI in London last month. I didn't take any notes for a few reasons. Firstly I was too glued to the screen to scribble into my notepad. Secondly I thought that there is not much point noting down details because I won't be able to write them in a preview for fear of giving too much away.
Below is a transcript of the Q&A with Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton and Inside No. 9 producer Adam Tandy, which took place after an exclusive screening of two episodes at the BFI in London earlier this month, The Referee's A W***er, which opens the new series, and The Stakeout, which closes it.
Inside No. 9 returns on Monday 3rd February at 10pm on BBC Two.
The first trailer has been released to promote the eagerly awaited fifth run of Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton's anthology series Inside No. 9.
Full details of the series are still under wraps but it will include two episodes, The Referee's A W***er co-starring Ralf Little and David Morrissey and The Stakeout, which were recently screened at a BFI Inside No. 9 night.
Acclaimed anthology series Inside No 9 looks set to return for a fifth series sooner rather than later in 2020.
Co-creator Reece Shearsmith tweeted on New Year's Day: "Inside No.9. Series 5. Soon. (Ish). I know the wait has been like..." (see picture below)
The latest run of the series was filmed early in 2019 and Shearsmith later added on social media that the long wait was not his fault: "Was ready to show in April last year. Nothing to do with us!"
The multi-talented duo will develop new comedy and comedy drama projects for the UK and international market in an exclusive first look deal over two years.
