BBC Comedy and Liverpool Film Office Launch Project to Discover Liverpool’s Next Comedy Talent

Following the success of the BBC Comedy Festival in Liverpool in May, BBC Comedy and the Liverpool Film Office have partnered to launch the BBC Comedy Liverpool Script Development project.

BBC Radio 4 has also commissioned a huge variety of new stand-up to go in the Stand-Up Specials feed on BBC Sounds, including Bella Hull’s Guide to More or Less Being Okay, a new series from SNL UK wrier Bella Hull (pictured), where she explores issues affecting Gen Z, from mental health to food, money, sex and love.

Chris Sussman Joins BBC as New Director of Comedy

BBC Chief Content Officer Kate Phillips has appointed Chris Sussman as Director of Comedy. He was previously Director of Scripted Series at Netflix UK and was Head of Comedy at BBC Studios.

At Netflix he helped build the UK scripted slate, working across series such as Man Versus Bee, Baby Reindeer, Stay Close, Bodies and Black Mirror.

Comedy Murder Mystery He Had It Coming Comes to BBC

The BBC has acquired He Had It Coming, an Australian comedy-drama starring Lydia West (Big Mood, It’s a Sin), for BBC iPlayer and BBC Three from FIFTH SEASON, which handles global distribution on the series. Alongside West, Natasha Liu Bordizzo (Ahsoka: Star Wars, The Voyeurs), and ​Liv Hewson (Yellowjackets, Bombshell) star in the eight-part series which follows two women accidentally entangled in a murder mystery when their spontaneous feminist art activism is co-opted by a killer.

BBC Radio 4 will, for the third year, broadcast a special showcase featuring the nominees for the Audible Best Comedy Show and the Taffner Family Best Newcomer Award.

BBC Entertainment And UKTV Team Up For Comedy Co-commission

UKTV and BBC Entertainment have unveiled a joint co-commissioning brief, inviting production companies to pitch bold new comedy entertainment formats. The resulting 10 x 30’ series will premiere on U&Dave and UKTV’s free streaming service U, before airing on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.

New Writers Join BBC Studios Comedy Team

BBC Studios has announced that two new writers will be joining its award winning Comedy and Entertainment Audio Productions team on two six month schemes to hone their skills and contribute to the growing slate of productions that already include the likes of Strong Message Here from Armando Iannucci for the BBC through to recent hits like The Big Pitch with Jimmy Carr for Netflix.
 
The scheme, which first started in 1978, will see Angela Channell and Adrian Gray joining this year.
