The BBC has released the following statement this morning about their future plans for comedy.
British comedy is one of our greatest cultural triumphs exported the world over, from Chaplin to Fleabag it’s something we’re exceptional at. Laughter is one of life’s great joys; it unites and connects us, benefits mental health and defines our national character. Yet British comedy is facing unprecedented challenges.
BBC Comedy Commissioning and the Mental Health Foundation are delighted to announce the recipient of the inaugural Galton & Simpson Bursary for Comedy Writing is Grace Mulvey.
The bursary is a collaboration between the BBC and the Mental Health Foundation and is named after Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, one of the best loved and most enduring writing partnerships in comedy history.
The final show will feature memorable moments from the archive alongside new sketches and contributions from famous faces who’ve been tackled by Jonathan Watson and the Only An Excuse? team down the years.
Josh Cole, Head of Comedy, BBC Studios Production, has strengthened his comedy team with four new appointments. Madeline Addy and Tom Jordan join the team as Executive Producers, Sarah Linton joins as Senior Development Producer and Kenny Tanner join as Development Producer.
The BBC World Service is launching a new topical comedy podcast and radio series ‘Comedians vs. The News’, hosted by New York City comedians Jess Salomon and Eman El-Husseini. Each week Jess and Eman will also be joined by two international comedians to take on the headlines and find the funny in the stories the world is talking about.
The BBC is to celebrate the acts of kindness, humour and the spirit of hope and resilience that are keeping the nation going during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic with a special night of programming for BBC One.
Sir Lenny Henry has confirmed the first three celebs taking part – Peter Kay, Catherine Tate and Gary Barlow. Further names to be revealed in due course.
The Chairman of the BBC, Sir David Clementi, says: “Tony Hall is an inspirational creative leader, within the UK and around the globe, and the BBC has been lucky to have him as our Director-General for the last seven years.
The story is based on real life events after Michael found a swelling on his testicle when he was fifteen.
