Car Share
Last night’s Peter Kay’s Car Share: The Finale peaked at 6.4m viewers; the average was 6m with a 34.2% audience share.
Peter Kay said: "It's been a five year labour of love and we've loved working on it."
Well that was about as soppy as everyone expected Peter Kay's very last Car Share to be.
I did wonder for a moment if there was going to be an awful accident because John (Peter Kay) kept glancing at his phone or looking at Kayleigh (Sian Gibson). And in fact the episode did feature a smash, but not in the way I expected. It was caused by Kayleigh getting out of the car to save a hedgehog, causing the car behind to swerve and prang and then for the door of John's Fiat to be sliced off by a passing truck.
The BBC has confirmed that the two new episodes of Peter Kay's Car Share will be broadcast in 2018.
This follows the shock news that Kay has cancelled all of his upcoming projects including his huge arena tour which was due to run until 2019.
A BBC spokeswoman said the episodes - an improvised episode and "a special finale" - have already been filmed.
Peter Kay's Car Share is set to return in 2018. Peter Kay has announced the return of the BAFTA award winning Car Share with two brand new specials on BBC One.
The second series finished on a will-they-won't-they romantic cliffhanger between John (Kay) and Kayleigh (Sian Gibson).
Fans of the Peter Kay sitcom Car Share are signing a petition asking the comedian to make more episodes.
The petition, launched by fan Ryan Williams, has attracted nearly 10,000 signatures so far.
The last series only consisted of four episodes and while there were rumours of a Christmas special following the possible romance between John (Kay) and Kayleigh (Sian Gibson). Peter Kay has insisted that there will be no more peisodes and that he wants to quit while he is ahead.
Despite rumours circulating on social media today that there would be a Christmas special for Car Share Peter Kay has said that the final episode will be the fourth one which is broadcast on BBC1 at 9pm this evening.
Talking to BBC Radio Manchester Kay said that there will be no series three and no Christmas specials: "There's not going to be a series three"
He added: "You've got to get out while the going's good. No Christmas special, no."
I’m not sure whether this should be billed as a preview or a review. At the time of writing the second episode of Peter Kay’s Car Share has not been broadcast, but judging by the Ed Sheeran-style record-breaking success of the four-part series box set on iPlayer I expect a lot of people reading this will have already seen the second episode. And the third and the fourth. I’m still keeping it old school and resisting a binge.
Since Car Share series two premiered on BBC One and the entire series launched on BBC iPlayer the four episodes have occupied the top four slots of requested programmes on BBC iPlayer and amassed over 2.5 million requests in total. Never before have all episodes of one series appeared in the very top slots of iPlayer’s most popular programmes.
Major spoiler alert. At the start of the second series of Car Share John (Peter Kay) and Kayleigh (Sian Gibson) aren’t even sharing a car. Who says Peter Kay is a comedian who prefers to play safe rather than shake things up?
