I turned on the radio yesterday afternoon and heard a comedian telling people not to go to his gig. It was James Acaster on Radio 5 and while he was there ostensibly to plug his extended Soho Theatre run, you could almost hear the cogs in his brain whirring as he suddenly realised that with the DJ bigging him up so much he might be attracting gangs of Doreen-from-accounts-in-deely-boppers drunken Christmas office parties to his show.
James Acaster has added an extra run of shows at the Soho Theatre to follow his recent 10-night sell-out run at the venue. He will now return for more shows from December 9 - 23 due to phenomenal demand. In total Acaster will have entertained an audience the size of Hammersmith Apollo by the end of this run.

There are comedians who shoot out gags like machine gun fire and then there is James Acaster. The slow burn Kettering stand-up bagged a Foster's Comedy Award nomination for his show Prompt last year and he has returned, guns discreetly blazing, with a new mini-masterpiece, which refines his idiosyncratic technique and quirky stage persona.
I was told to get in the trenches and cut back on the comedy godzillas by a reader recently so I made a trip to the the Invisible Dot's new regular Saturday Night Show last night. I'm not sure if this really counts as the trenches though. It's a swish, industrial room a spit from King's Cross station which attracts the coolest of comedy crowds (think Hacienda Club just before acid house kicked in but cosier) thanks to ID's skilful booking policy.
