At the start of the Edinburgh Fringe 2016 the Evening Standard asked me to interview someone who would pick up a lastminute.com Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination. I took a punt on Manchester United fan Nish Kumar but it really wasn't a big gamble. Kumar is very much a rising star who has found his voice in recent years.

The Good Immigrant brings together emerging British BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) writers, poets, journalists and artists. In these essays about race and immigration, they paint a picture of what it means to be ‘other’ in a country that wants you, doesn’t want you, doesn’t accept you, needs you for its equality monitoring forms and would prefer you if you won a major reality show competition.

The Cutty Sark in Greenwich is launching a new season of comedy shows this week. Star attractions will be playing intimate gigs in the studio theatre below the deck of the legendary tea clipper which is moored in Greenwich in south London.

The British Comedy Guide looked at over 1900 different comedy shows, collating more than 5000 reviews from over 50 publications in August and analysed the write-ups.

Nish Kumar is making a name for himself. Not just as a smart, stand-up comedian but as someone who comes up with titles that get his shows talked about. Last year’s Edinburgh show was Ruminations on the Nature of Subjectivity, this year’s show is Long Word... Long Word... Blah Blah Blah... I'm So Clever.
Even stand-up comedians have to have a bit of a holiday at Christmas, if only to count up all the royalties they've made on their DVD sales.
