Notts-based Scott Bennett has won Best Act at the Midlands Comedy Awards for the third time in a row at the annual ceremony to recognise regional comedy talent. While relative newcomers Hollywood Comedy Club – based in the Hollywood suburb of Birmingham – triumphed in the Best Comedy Club category, narrowly beating the perennial favourite, Birmingham’s Glee Club, into second place.
I must be getting live comedy withdrawal symptoms, I dreamt about being at a Stewart Lee gig the other night. Still maybe help is at hand. Comedians have been quick to get stuck into the online world with Robin Ince pulling in a lot of friends for a veritable online Comedy festival next week. But first out of the blocks was Scott Bennett, who last night broadcast a live one hour stand-up set from his garden shed via his Facebook page.
In a repeat of last year’s result, Nottingham-based Scott Bennett (pictured) has been named Best Act at Midlands Comedy Awards 2019, with Josh Pugh once again taking the runner-up spot.
However, Josh Pugh did win the Best Live Show award for “Maybe The Real Comedy Awards Are The Friends We Make Along The Way”.
Scott Bennett won Best Act at the annual Midlands Comedy Awards this week, with veteran compere Barry Dodds recognised as Best MC for the fourth year in a row, meaning both the top prizes went to Notts-based performers.
With newspapers shrinking and the number of shows increasing it has been particularly hard for less-established Edinburgh Fringe acts to get press coverage this year. Or even get press into their shows. I don't know how many critics have seen Scott Bennett yet, but if they haven't they are missing a treat.
In 2015 I had one of those "why-haven't-I-heard-of-you-before?" moments when I saw Scott Bennett do a brilliantly crowdpleasing short set at the Edinburgh Fringe. The reason I hadn't heard of him was that he was based in the north of England – I'm a soft southerner – and he had only recently taken up stand-up comedy. He is clearly a natural though. There were flashes of Peter Kay, John Bishop and Jason Manford in his easily relatable routines about family life.
