Sara Pascoe
Daniel Kitson is compering a benefit that has been hastily arranged to raise money to provide humanitarian aid for those who are and have been stuck in the Calais Jungle migrants’ camp. It is at the Old Vic in London on October 13.
The audience in the Latitude comedy tent can be a bit of a mixed bunch. Families having a picnic, friends sheltering from the sun or the rain or just slackers and stoners flaked out after a hard night. Not necessarily comedy fans. But it was clear by the cheer when Sara Pascoe came on that a lot of people knew her and wanted to hear what she had to say, which always makes a performer happier than confusion or indifference (which seemed to be what Nick Helm was experiencing when I arrived as he was finishing).

If you ever stay at Sara Pascoe’s house do not use her electric tooth- brush. One of the various intimate revelations in this brisk, condensed version of her touring show Animal explains what she does with it. Dental hygiene is not involved.
Sara Pascoe is on a bit of a roll at the moment. She is a TV regular, she is touring the UK and her first book, Animal: The Autobiography of a Female Body, has just been published and has been getting great reviews. Ooh look, here's one.
A couple of years ago every stand-up with a TV credit under their belt seemed to be knocking out an autobiography as if they were going out of style. Sara Pascoe’s first book is very different to that. Animal is more anthropology than autobiography. No mention of life on the road, big breaks or meeting celebrities, this is more of a self-help manual. Mainly for young women I would suggest, but all women and all men should read it too.
